ABOUT ALAN BARR YOGA

Who am I?

I am a RYT 200 hour qualified yoga teacher.
Maybe more interestingly, I’m a fifty plus year old bloke who discovered a passion for yoga late in life.
After nearly thirty years of being hunched over a desk in the city, I’m enjoying my new life!
I’m not Mr bendy, Mr flexible, Mr picture perfect yogi.
You won’t find pictures of me doing amazing poses on Instagram.
But what I am is someone committed to helping others come to enjoy yoga the way I do.

WHAT YOGA MEANS TO ME

A gift for life

For me a lot of the clichés about yoga have come true.  It has given me a new purpose in life. Yoga has re-awakened my body and helped me become more active and interested in my general physical wellbeing. It has given me head space and helps me make sense of the world around me.

When I was studying for my teaching qualification I was asked to write my own yoga philosophy. For me it was simple – I had given myself the gift of yoga and wanted other people to find that gift as well. My aim is to enjoy yoga for the rest of my life, a true gift.

WHY COME TO ME?

Keep it simple

For me teaching yoga is all about you, the student. How does your body feel? What is your intention? What do you want to achieve?  It is my job to understand that and help you achieve your best practice on any given day.
I am not here to force you to do anything you don’t want to.
My teaching focuses on breathing and simple, clear instruction to help you get the most out of your practice and enjoy it!
I am a believer in sustainable practice, not pushing to the limits.
I want you to be able to take what you learn in class and practice at home, feeling confident in your own ability. I hope to maintain my practice well into my old age, and I hope that I can encourage you to do the same.

WHAT TYPE OF YOGA?

Don't stress about the terminology

There are so many names and terms for yoga these days, it's easy to get confused. I was taught in the Ashtanga Vinyasa style. That means I teach a reasonably fluid style of yoga. I can speed it up or slow it down and call it a hundred different things. But at the end of the day I tailor my lessons to my students - no fancy names required.
However, for clarity I do not teach Bikram or Iyengar yoga - both of which have quite unique approaches.

PRIVATE LESSONS

Your yoga

Maybe you don’t like group sessions. Maybe you want to focus on something specific in your practice. Maybe your local studio timetable never really works for you. Or maybe you just want some time for yourself.  Whatever the reason, a private lesson might be right for you.

I am available for private 1-2-1 or small group lessons, in and around Central and South East London. These lessons can be tailored to your individual needs and can be at a time and location that is convenient for you.

That location might be your home or even your office. All you need is a bit of private space with an even/flat floor and enough space for a couple of yoga mats.

CORPORATE CLASSES

Workplace wellness

Maybe a group of you at work would like a yoga class that fits around your schedule - rather than running from meeting to lunchtime class to desk!
Many enlightened employers also now offer wellbeing programmes for their staff which include yoga practice. Again, as long as you have some private space, room for the mats (and approval from management!!) we can practice almost anywhere.
